Traffic Marshall
I’m West Indian, born in North London having previously worked in the Transportation Industry for 19 years, the same job that made me stronger was eventually going to break me and I decided I needed a fresh start. My brother introduced me to the construction industry, and I’ve now been working as a Traffic Marshal for the past four years. A career change after 19 years wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right decision. I believe it comes down to the team and the environment and I’m very fortunate to be in the right job with the right people.
What does Equality and Diversity mean to you?
For me looking at the word ‘Equality’, means that everyone should be treated fairly but not the same as sometimes we must treat people differently to treat everyone equal. Diversity to me means being inclusive of all backgrounds where everyone has the same opportunities.
How long have you been working for DGP and how did you come to join us?
I joined DGP in 2022 and joined the team after being contacted by a DGP Logistics Manager who I previously worked with. He said, “Mark, stick with me and you’ll always be in work”. He has delivered more than promised and I can sing his praises all day long.
Do you feel supported and what is the atmosphere like within the team? Do you feel part of the team?
The atmosphere is brilliant on site, these are the best traffic marshals I have worked with. There was no apprehension, from day one I felt part of the team with a sense of belonging. Feeling included has given me great comfort, confidence and made me feel at ease. It’s nice to be part of the family, it makes me feel emotional. I’ve never worked with a team like this before.
Do you feel there are opportunities to guide you on your career journey with DGP?
If I wish to take them yes, most definitely. However, at this stage in my life, I am very comfortable where I am at in terms of my career. But I know if this was something I was interested in, DGP would have my best interest in mind and help me to progress within the industry.
What is the best site you have worked on and why?
In terms of feeling comfortable, confident, and surrounded by a great team, I’d have to say this site, the Panorama at St Paul’s. Let’s face it, some people don’t like coming to work, but I have to say I love my job. When I come in on the way to work, I know it is going to be a good day because I get to work with great people.
